Room IV — The Bust of Augustus

The room is dedicated to the bust of Augustus discovered near the Santa Anastasia canal, bearing witness to the symbolic value of imperial power in the territory of Fondi.

The Santa Anastasia canal was an ancient waterway connected to Lake Fondi and to the trade network between the sea, the hinterland, and the Via Appia. The exhibition path introduces the context of discovery — a large Late Antique complex decorated with mosaics and frescoes — within which the sculpture was found.

The bust of Augustus, the masterpiece of the display, bears witness to the presence and symbolic value of imperial power in the territory of Fondi.
